When the Republicans took the House of Representatives last fall, Rep. Darrell Issa, who was scheduled to become chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said that he was planning to issues hundreds of subpoenas to tear the Obama administration apart. In Issa’s view, the Committee isn’t about government oversight, but about pushing the Republican propaganda that the Obama administration is dictatorial.
Thursday’s hearing on the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act is a case in point. Issa did not call a single woman to testify. All he called were men who are characterizing the mandate as Obama’s “war on religion.” No dissenting voice was allowed to say that the religious leaders who are fighting the contraception mandate are waging war on women. Issa’s position is that only clergymen were qualified to speak on “religious liberty.” The institutions involved, hospitals, colleges, universities and others who serve people no matter what their faith, receive Federal
Contraception prevents abortions. Maybe these Republicans should make up their minds which they object to more – not getting pregnant or aborting a baby. Contraception regulates irregular periods, it treats medical conditions, it prevents pregnancies in women who would be physically damaged by a pregnancy.
Oklahoma’s Republican legislature is set to pass the “personhood law”. Their Senate passed it, and now it goes to their House. That law would effectively ban abortions in every circumstance, even to save the life of the mother. It is a license to kill women.
The Republicans are also refusing to vote to renew the Violence Against Women Act. Sen. Charles Grassley is objecting to the act because any group that receives grants, safe homes for battered women, cannot discriminate in hiring, and illegal immigrants can seek help from these groups without being reported for deportation. Without this law, police are hamstrung in domestic violence situations.
The sickest part of this is Republican women. They are going along with this crap. They are so deep into the Party that they cannot see that these positions hurt them as well as us.
The Republican Party has staked out its position – women should not have contraceptive medication under any circumstances, women should not be able to get abortions under any circumstances, women should not be protected from violence under any circumstances. These are the positions of the Republican Party. They have not just declared war on women, they are issuing death warrants on women. They believe that the price for their return to complete legislative and executive power in America is the lives of women, and they are willing to have us pay that price.
