Gay Austrian Man To Sit On Catholic Parish Council

Coat of Arms of Vatican City

Oh Catholicism, you are so delightfully disjointed when it comes to homosexuality. Florian Stangl has been with his husband (registered domestic partner) for some time now, and the 26-year-old was just overwhelmingly elected to the parish council. The priest nixed the whole deal, and originally, the archdiocese supported the priest.

These parish councils are made up of lay people and are there to discuss local church and parish affairs. Well, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn decided to reverse course on the election of Stangl to the position, and overrode the priest. Schoenborn has voiced, according to The Edge, an open mind on issues like homosexuality and priestly celibacy.
