Glee has a popularity that no tv show in history has seen. It has fans ranging from teens to adults. Everyone from bankers and state employees to artists and the gay community. But tonight’s episode introduces a new character, Unique.
Unique is the female personality of Glee Project participant, Alex Newell’s character, Wade. In this episode he comes to Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) for advice. Soft spoken, but enthusiastic, Alex is part of the competition for The New Directions going into their next competition, but wants to perform in drag. He needs their help.
But its not just their help he gets. Coach Sue (Jane Lynch), who has taken to working with the Glee teens while pregnant, wants in on sabotaging the enemy by helping the wanna-be cross-dresser. Like Glinda the Good Witch, Sue provides the advisers a pair of sparkling platform heels to have Unique wear for the show, even though Kurt & Mercedes warn about how it will be taken by the viewing public in Ohio.
Kurt & Mercedes go to Wade before he performs and try to stop him, but he refuses. When the spotlight shows and Unique appears on stage, you don’t immediately realize that its him. He’s a gorgeous, flamboyant queen of soul when he breaks out into a full dance number to disco’s “I Want to put on my Boogie Shoes”. Its hysterical to watch as his voice coach, Rachael’s former flame Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff), loses his mind at the vision of a drag queen leading his performance and almost ruins it by yelling at Unique from the wings to get off it.
