Sabrina the Teenage Witch has been around since the 1960s (though it would be difficult to convince a child of the 1990s of this fact). She started as a character in Archie Comics living with her witch aunts and her black cat, then spinning off into her own TV series once in 1969, again in 1971, and one more time in 1996, when she was played popularly by Melissa Joan Hart, spanning from her teen years into her college years. Many only know her in this version of the character. Even though shes “technically” a comics character who can be re-imagined in many ways, some people are having difficulty swallowing the latest idea that’s popped up for a reincarnated Sabrina.

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is planning “an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man” for Sabrina, who will be learning to accept and control her powers as a witch in a movie with an “edgier” tone. They’ll still be keeping her talking black cat Salem, but this time he’ll be “a transformed prince creating unique love stories for Sabrina.” …And while that sounds mighty princessly for a teen witch, the crew involved are definitely familiar with edgier projects. Writers Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari wrote Die In A Gunfight, and producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford are veterans of Real Steel. Considering how long it has been since Sabrina has been seen, it is easy to guess that a relative unknown will be cast in the part.

As a Pagan, a fan of comics, witches, superheroes and re-imagined story-lines….I’m skeptical. We shall see. I’m personally very curious to see what they do with the character and the story line. Also, Will Salem be CGI, Real or something else?
