One Million Moms Declares ‘Huge Victory’ Over GCB Cancellation

Apparently One Million Moms cannot be bothered to check things like, oh, ratings. As has been reported, ABC canceled the show GCB. The reason- low ratings. For a network like ABC, hitting only about 1.8 million viewers per episode in the key 18-45 demographic is troubling. So, of course, the axe was dropped on the show.

One Million Moms, though, sent out this:

HUGE Victory! The ABC series “GCB,” which is known for its controversial title and nasty portrayal of Christians, has been canceled!

“GCB” got axed by ABC and won’t be coming back for a second season. Praise the Lord! Jesus Christ will not be mocked! God is using OneMillionMoms.com to help remove this filth from television. As the hands and feet for the Lord, we are making a real difference.

These accomplishments are the result of the Lord’s blessing on the prayers, action alerts, email letters, and gifts from concerned and generous supporters.

Would you help us to continue these important efforts?

What kind of country are we going to leave our children and grandchildren if we don’t fight for our values? We may not win all the battles, but we will win some. But I sure don’t want to give our country over without a fight and I know you don’t either. We depend heavily on donations. Your gift is greatly needed for OMM to remain strong!

Have you ever noticed how these “huge victories” always seem to come from totally unrelated events? I mean, not long ago, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League was busy crowing over Delta Airline’s decision to pull their ads from The Daily Show about a month after he called for a boycott of the show. Of course, it has been months since anyone had seen a Delta commercial on The Daily Show anyway. Delta simply made official what was already happening.

This is not a victory for OMM, not really. They are just so desperate to actually have a victory that they have to manufacture one out of unrelated events.

We need to cease giving attention to sicko, Monica Cole. The girl has absolutely no sense of right from wrong. Her reprobated spirit can not distinguish truth from lies. Do you not see it is all about MONEY with Cole. Has anyone received her e-mails asking for donation of $30.00. If all those wacko moms would give their cult leader $30.00 that would be $1,200,000.00 in income from sitting on her butt all day telling stupid, ignorant people what they want to hear. Can anyone see what a con-artists Monica Cole is. The easiest way to con anyone is to use bible. The girl has no morals, no values, no integrity.

I think OMM should watch “jersey shore”. I’d love to see their reviews on that show. Lol

As a Christian, I thought the show was hilarious and am very sad to hear that it will not be back for a second season. The show was not offensive towards Christians but displayed the reality of life, that all people are flawed and no one is perfect. I don’t see anything wrong with that. And I agree that there are many more shows on tv that are much more detrimental to society and young people.

I hate the fact that YOU people think that your praying and whining got this canceled. If you didn’t like it all you had to do was turn it off and go to your praying. Go to your little closed off world and think that your children aren’t exposed to worse then what this show portrayed. You kids probably seen sex, drugs, violence and language and that’s just in your home

You know, from reading all these comments about “religion and christianity”, I am so sick and tired of people hating a show about christianity. I am born and raised Roman Catholic, and I for one, was NOT offended by the show. The show was funny, spiritually educational and has teachings of right and wrong. No other show was ever brave enough to have religious content as GCB. Why do all the haters think they can control who gets to watch what show??? Is it better to have shows on that contain foul language? Murder? Rape? etc…people need to grow the heck up and see the show for what it was…a satire comedy. In my opinion, if you were offended, then I guess the truth hurts. Lastly, nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is perfect, no matter the religion etc…and all women can be a bitch at some point in their life. Who cares! Have a good day all!

What’s the matter, OMM? Did the show subject matter hit a little too close to home?

    Delwyn,

I hope you are still on this site to get this comment. The show is camp, satire. But, as a born-again believer, I value any tool used to get the Word out. Every episode, scripture was quoted. I’ve even read other blogs and comments that people started reading their bibles and some were introduced to scripture because of this show. No other show today was doing that! And, the original title was offensive to me, but I realize what it was designed to do. The show was funny and had some pretty good insightful lessons to learn. It did not “belittle” Christians. In fact, it actually showed what a true Christian is: flawed and being perfected. Truthfully. Even showed pastors in a real light and their commitment to their calling. And, being from Washington, DC, raised in an era where Southern manners and charm dominated the city (has changed a great deal over the last 20 yrs), I got this show. And, there are very few ensemble shows that speak to a mature age group raised in Christian dominated communities.

I agree with Bridgette, we are constantly bombarded by offensive images on TV. How many times have you seen Muslims portrayed as quasi-terrorists, dangerous, questionable people as characters, or as liars and thieves. As an African American, I am offended by shows like “The Parkers”, “Moesha”, “The Game” and a whole slew of urban comedies. There is a show coming out called (I think) “The Pastor” with Cedric the Comedian. One look at the poster and the woman who plays his wife (fake hair, big boobs, low cut – objectifying dress) and already I know what the show is about and the one-dimensional, stereotyped portrayal they will have of Black Christians and Black women in predominantly Black communities. I relate more to the women of GCB than I would to whatever show that would be, because of the charm and class those characters portrayed.

I cannot say that I already know what a show will be about, based on the fact that Cedric the Entertainer is starring in it. As regards Neicy Nash, the female lead, she has always had a lot of hair, and, yes, she is a voluptuous woman. If that offends you, so be it. I have not read the blogs that you read, and I have not read any other sites that praised this show. Nevertheless, not everyone has the same tastes. I, for one, had no problems with Moesha, and thought that it was a pretty good portrayal of young people growing up in the Inglewood section of L.A. The Parkers said more about Monique than about black women in general, and that show even showed her best friend, Andelle, as being critical of some of the things that she did.
As relates to this show, the fact that the name had to be changed spoke volumes to me, but appears to have little impact on you. The fact that the target of this satire was Christians, again, speaks volumes. You found this to be acceptable, but my fiance did not. I cannot condemn your assessment, because I don’t know you, but I trust her judgment, because I DO know her. God bless you.

Have any of you seen “The Soul Man” starring Cedric the Entertainer and Niecy Nash? It is an EXCELLENT treatment, in a humorous vein, about the life of a preacher and family. Since some of you commended GCB based on teh idea that there are no shows out there that are performing this service, I encourage you to check out how creative people can be without diving into the lowest common denominator. The show airs Wednesday nights on TV Land.

The Soul Man, like GCB, isn’t my kind of show…but I still think that they should be shown, and I hate that OMM is busy acting like they are over these shows.

I can’t believe people are taking GAB so seriously I mean honestly people, this isn’t the first “controversial” television show and the title GAB originally stances for Good Christian Belles and I really liked the show and thought it was funny and a fresh breath of air from the usual shows that air on abc. People were and are taking this show too seriously they weren’t slandering Jesus just crazy church goers I wish the show would have gone for another season and IMMEDIATE needs come down and instill in there children to take a joke!

Thank you Bridgette, you were very kind. My dear honey told me that she did not like the show because of its portrayal of Christian women using the “B” word, and I respected that. Personally, I don’t like those “Housewife” shows, “Basketball Wives,” “Bad Girls,” or anything else that glorifies boorish behavior. I don’t understand why we, as a culture, wish to be regalled with conduct that should ellicit shame. I have a son, and I constantly remind him that, regardless of what he may see on someone’s TV, good women are not an endangered species, and he doesn’t have to put up with rude behavior just to have a relationship when he gets older. As a Christian man, I do not know any saved women whom I would call a female dog, and as a man, I don’t know any women who look like they walk on four legs.

    Good afternoon Bridgette,
Perhaps I don’t watch as much TV as you do, but the channels that I watch tend not to do programs that demean any group. I don’t know what channels you watch, so I cannot refute your statement.
That being said, ABC is a major network. Could you tell me what shows in recent memory have been aired on ABC that demeaned any of the aforementioned groups? Perhaps I missed those nights, but then, I mostly watch USA and WGN, along with the Military Channel, so perhaps I’m just missing out on all of that quality programming that you have been enjoying.

      Delwyn,

You’re further out of the loop than I am, and I’m pretty far out of the loop. However, there is one show that I do watch that hits most of those groups on a rotating basis, and that would be The Daily Show. Like you, though, I tend to watch very little in the way of television as I watch mostly HUB, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central (which tends to have a high number of shows satirizing the African-American Community), Food Network and The Cooking Channel.

And I wouldn’t necessarily say that a lot of what is on most networks is quality. Honestly, I find the bulk of the shows on most networks to not be worth watching. I’m just aware of them. I learned a long time ago not to make overly broad statements about what is or is not on television because someone, somewhere will make fun of it.

As for GCB- One Million Moms is a hate group affiliate. The show itself I didn’t care for, but I wanted OMM to not get away with attacking the show just because they want to try and force us to watch only what they say that we can. I wanted the show to stand or fall on its own. I’m just not very nice towards people like OMM.

Never saw the show; didn’t like the title. I think that calling a woman a b**** is disrespectful, just like calling a black person a n***** is. Some words are innapropriate, I don’t care how you try to “redeem” them.
I’m sure that we won’t see this the same way, just like not everyone thinks that the way they are living is missing the mark. The only people who think about sin are the ones who are tryng not to do so. The rest are too busy calling “good” “evil” and “evil” “good.” Which side are you on?

Let me get this straight….OMM takes a stand to get a show cancelled because they feel it would damage the future of our country?? You must be joking. I believe there is a show called The Secret Life Of The American Teenager (on a network named ABC FAMILY none the less)….AND 16 And Pregnant!! Where is the fear for our country’s future when it comes to these shows, OMM?!?! The problem here is that there is a HUGE lack of communication between parents and their children. I understand there are shows out there aimed at adults (GCB being one) and there are shows aimed at children/teens (ummmm….16 And Pregnant). As a parent it IS YOUR JOB to teach and direct your children. I think Fostertd makes a good point….maybe the mirror was a little too real for the eyes of some when it came to GCB. Too bad. People, do not forget we are human. Since when did an attitude of being high and mighty become part of the Christian requisite? I hate to say that I fear for our future as well….and it is not because of shows on television. I feel that a huge part of the religious community has lost track of what they should be standing for. And I fear that too many parents are allowing others to raise their children. Easier to blame than to take on the responsibilty upon yourself.

Monica Cole continually displays her lack of integrity. Does Cole actually believe high-powered, wealthy Hollywood executives care what someone from Tupelo, Mississippi (the state with the lowest educational status) wants. The girl has severe mental issues.

The only reason people want the show canceled is because the truth is to hurtful. It was a good show. Done in very good taste. Not like the other shows that carry on about racial relationships, same sex relationships, teenage pregnancy, etc… So, I guess it was and is ok for our children and grandchildren to watch those shows.
What is wrong with our world today is that people do not respect each other and we took moment of silence and the Pledge of the Allegiance out of our school systems. We are to worried about what everyone else is doing instead of paying attention to our own children and families.
So, if the show hurt your feelings so much than maybe you need to look at the reason with in yourself; because there was not any sexual activity, cussing, or young teenagers trashing each other. How could the show bothering you that bad?

“What does GCB stand for? Originally, it was Good Christian Bitches, from the book this new tv series is based on. ABC got cold feet, however, and changed it to Good Christian Belles and, then, in a burst of creativity, reduced it to textese.” – from “Early Word.”
The show satired a portion of the Christian community. I have not seen any shows satiring a portion of the Muslim community, the illegal immigrant community, the African American community, or the Buddhist community. Why the entertainment industry finds it acceptable to belittle Christians is not a question I spend a lot of time on, but please do not insult my intelligence by claiming that such was not the intent of this show.

      Delwyn,

I hate to say this, but you just lost any credence with this comment. I have seen plenty of shows satiring the African-American, Mexican, Asian, and so forth communities, and there are shows that have mocked Buddhism and so forth. By and large, the reason why Hollywood satirizes Christianity is because they are the majority religion in the nation. This is why most satires center around White Americans too. You cannot hide behind the ‘Hollywood is bad’ argument and have any credence when it comes to an argument.
