He had a power-sharing agreement with the Vatican (which by coincidence is now involved with malicious anti-gay politicking in the U.S.) Mussolini gave the Vatican independent nation status in exchange for its tacit agreement not to criticize him. The schools had mandatory daily lessons in Catholicism. On the one hand, Mussolini alleged there were no homosexuals in Italy. On the other hand, he and the Vatican worked hard to demonize Italian homosexuals. Many victims got shipped off to concentration camps north of Italy. But, there was one concentration camp near Trieste; Mussolini and the Church conspired to send gay victims there, often to their deaths. Today, at the site, a memorial stands to those gay Italian Holocaust victims. The Vatican has never apologized for its role in their persecution and murders.
