My grandfather refused to join the National Rifle Association. In fact, he was adamantly against joining it for a very simple reason. One thing that Adolf Hitler supposedly did early on was grab the rosters of groups like the NRA and round up the guns from those they were seeking to oppress. How accurate this is has to be debated since it does not appear to be in the historical record. However, having one’s name in a register of guns is definitely a risky proposition.
Still, it is not accurate to claim that any kind of slaughter of citizens occurred because of reasonable controls of guns, but rather because of a stripping away of all rights and the imposition of tyranny.
Samuel Wurzelbacher is running for Congress in Ohio against Marcy Kaptur..
In the above ad, Wurzelbacher states “In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated. . .In 1939, Germany established gun control. . .From 1939 to 1945, six million Jews and seven million others unable to defend themselves were exterminated. . .I love America.”
The National Jewish Democratic Council has already slammed the video with David Harris, the president of the NJDC, calling it “beyond the pale” and called on Wurzelbacher to “apologize and remove this offensive video immediately.”
However, his spokesman has already been contact and just made things worse saying that there is nothing offensive about the video and even going as far as saying “Well, blacks weren’t allowed to own guns in the south, that’s a historical fact as well. So, it would seem that the argument would apply there as well.”
In actuality, what caused the Holocaust was not a lack of gun ownership, but rather a perversion of the democratic process. The law that Wurzelbacher makes reference to, the 1938 German Weapons Act, actually deregulated all long barrel weapons, shotguns and ammunition. In fact, you did not need to acquire a permit to buy a rifle, shotgun or the associated ammunition. A permit was still needed for a handgun. The law did restrict Jews from owning weapons, but by that point, the German attempts to degrade and destroy the Jewish population in Germany was already underway.
So, in actuality, the Nazi’s deregulated gun ownership completely. Of course, Republicans never like to let facts get in the way of fearmongering.

Am I correct in inferring that you think the unemployment and economic statistics are inflated, or are you referring to the crime report data being tampered with?
I have seen the phrase “sensible gun control” now several times today. (Rev O.C. Brown, Michelle Schimel, et al.)
What would “sensible gun cotnrol” enatail.
I do concur with your original point, the Holocaust was not caused by gun control.

For me, sensible gun control includes limiting the number of bullets in a magazine, limiting the kinds of guns available to non-automatic weapons, and requiring safety courses prior to owning a gun and requiring testing in order to maintain a gun license. I live in Vermont, and we have a lot of hunters here. I have no problems with hunting, but we also have a lot of preventable deaths here that could be taken care of by hammering into people gun safety. We have restrictions like the last two here in Vermont, though I believe that those are for hunting not gun ownership. Cooling off periods is another idea that I favor, and background checks wherever guns are bought.
And actually, the crime statistics have been manipulated. A lot of jurisdictions have been manipulating their crime stats in order to appear safer.

“One thing that is useful for people to understand is that violent crimes tend to follow the economic trends. The better the economy, the fewer violent crimes occur.”
The unemployment rate is currently at 8.2% and high energy prices have brought economic growth to a near halt.
2010 was the “safest” year in nearly forty years. At a time when the household worth was bottoming out.
I might be trolling here, but your argument has some huge holes.

The operative term in what I said is “tend”. That does not mean that it is an absolute- AND I should point out that there’s been a lot of funny stuff going on with the stats, so I don’t know how accurate everything is. I believe I said something about how there is a lot of smoke being blown about in the debate, and a lot of inaccurate information going out too.

Actually, your grandfather had a valid concern and yes, the Nazis were already persecuting Jews in 1938 — but they were not rounding them up — not yet. Note too that the Jews were not armed when the decision was made to move them to camps simply because German gun control laws forbade them and others to own guns.
As far as “gun control” in this country — it failed and is amost dead before the ongoing, almost nationwide concealed carry reforms that have seen resulted in fewer and declining violent crimes and fewer and declining gun accidents in 49 out of 50 states according to the Department of Justice’s own National Institute of Justice/Bureau of Justice Statistics, and the FBI Annual Crime Report for the last two decades. Chicago and northern Illinois is a stark reminder of high crime and strict gun control. That won’t last long.

My basic point is that the Holocaust would have happened one way or the other.
One thing that is useful for people to understand is that violent crimes tend to follow the economic trends. The better the economy, the fewer violent crimes occur. Owning a gun can give a false sense of security, honestly. The concealed carry laws really haven’t had an effect on the number of violent crimes that have occurred, and may have made things worse in some situations. I think there’s a lot of smoke being blown on this issue and it’s getting impossible to really find out what works and what doesn’t.
Of course, given the fact that most legislatures aren’t out there to actually fix the problems (which they could), but rather pay tribute to their corporate overlords, we probably will never get sensible and useful gun control in this nation.
