Sleepy Magic for Nap Time

Felix napping

I’ve been up since 6:30AM and I’m trying to get my son down for a nap. This makes me think….

Nap Time at my house involves watching the emerging pattern of my infant son, Felix, as he tires himself out while we apply “sleepy magic”. We have a routine now of what we watch for and what we have set up to assist in putting him on his way to Dreamland.

He begins by getting very vocal (screeching, cooing, laughing, and yelling). The louder he gets, the closer he is to falling asleep. He will pull on his hair (or ears) and/or rub his eyes to try to keep himself awake. We count his yawns. It takes about three yawns before we put him in his crib with a bottle, his favorite stuffed animal, and his blue fuzzy monkey blanket. {He has gotten to the point with holding a bottle at nap time that when he is too tired to drink it, he throws it away from himself and rolls over to sleep, but we still check to make sure he doesn’t fall asleep with it in his mouth. No drowning on dry land, Squirt!}

After this the television either gets muted with subtitles, turned to a music channel or turned off completely and music played on the laptop. At this point its just a matter of 5-10 minutes before he is completely asleep.

So what do I play that makes him unconscious so quickly? A few classics, of course. I know many people that have worked in daycares and have children of their own and what I’ve learned is that music with deep voices or a slow tempo tend to help the best.

So I kept this in mind when I made a playlist specifically for Felix to fall asleep to. Felix never talked to my friends about this, so his taste in music is a tad…different. Here are a few samples of what puts him to sleep the fastest.

Shhhhhh…….he’s finally asleep. ;D
