After Weekend of Gaffes, Romney Attacks Obama Women’s Rights Ad

In an attempt to deflect attention from his numerous gaffes, Mitt Romney is trying to attack President Barack Obama on a recent campaign ad which goes after Romney for his positions on women’s issues. The Romney campaign is upset over the assertion that Romney opposes abortion in all instances including rape and incest.

Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg told TalkingPointsMemo that “It’s no coincidence that after weeks of terrible economic news and the President’s comments that businessmen and women aren’t responsible for their own hard work, the Obama campaign drops false ads against Governor Romney in a desperate attempt to change the subject. No false ad can change the fact that President Obama has failed to create jobs and turn around the economy, hurting women all over the country.”

Those outside of the Romney camp may be wondering what bad economic news since there was a tiny bit in there somewhere around Romney causing immense embarrassment for the United States on the international stage by belittling the British preparations for the Olympics and not only, basically, saying that Israel’s economy is thriving because of “the power of at least culture and a few other things.” Never mind the fact that the Palestinians have trouble creating an economy between sanctions, the constant destruction of their infrastructure and other parts of the Israeli Occupation, but Romney just, basically, stated that Israelis are doing well because Jews are just culturally better with money than anyone else.

So far, Romney has earned the nickname Mitt the Twit from the British.

In the ad, the narrator states “Mitt Romney opposes requiring insurance coverage for contraception. And Romney supports overturning Roe versus Wade. Romney backed a bill that outlaws all abortion, even in case of rape and incest.”

The first two statements are, as TPM points out, accurate. The third is a stretch, but not overly so. During the 2008 campaign, Romney backed a constitutional amendment banning all abortion. Most of them at the time did not include exemptions for rape or incest. This time, Romney is backing exemptions for rape and incest and the life of the mother. TPM goes on to say “PolitiFact rates the Obama ad’s claim ‘pants on fire.’ The Obama campaign stands by it.”

Recently, Dr. Rachel Maddow showed that many fact check sites often incorrectly go after political campaigns using often dubious rationales behind their classifications. The Obama assertion is not a true lie even though it stretches the truth. Often they classify things as being lies that are not.

Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith stated that “Since running for president, Mitt Romney has been consistently extreme in his opposition to a woman’s right to choose. He’s even said that he would be ‘delighted’ to sign a bill banning all abortions. Either he’s backing off his positions or he’s not telling the truth.”

Romney bowed to pressure from social conservatives in the GOP to back a constitutional amendment saying that life begins at conception, which is being used in many states to try and get around abortion rights and to ban all forms of abortion including in cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother in danger.
