Come one come all to Reverend William C. Collier’s annual conference! At least if you’re White. That’s right, Reverend Collier sent out a flyer for his pastors’ conference which specifies that “All White Christians Invited”, and this has his town’s mayor hopping mad.
However, Collier defended his flyer stating that he isn’t a racist but….welll, “the white race is God’s chosen people.” The pastor of the Church of God’s Chosen (Christian Identity Ministries) insists that his group is not a hate group. He also defended his position by noting that “We don’t have the facilities to accommodate other people. We haven’t got any invitations to black, Muslim events. Of course we are not invited to Jewish events and stuff.”
What special facilities Blacks, Hispanics and Asian need have not been specified by Collier, but the line echoes the kinds of discrimination that marked the Segregation era of Southern history where there were water fountains, restaurants and bathrooms which were deemed to be “white” or “colored” only.
The church hosting the conference is named Christian Identity Ministries. This is the third annual conference — and the Ku Klux Klan is among the attendees this year. The founder of the church, Rev. Mel Lewis, complained that this year’s uproar shows a disrespect for religious liberty.
Lewis also stated when confronted by WSFA:
“Well, you’ve picked out some wonderful verses out of context and out of the direction of Scripture,” Lewis said when faced with the question of whether certain Scriptures include everyone – all races.
“All you’re doing is making a mockery of God’s Word,” said Lewis. “You’re absolutely abusing the Scripture.”
Lewis’ statements, ironically, mirror the various statements made by various religious groups when it comes to homosexuality. He even stated “We are not breaking any laws. We’re not violating any ordinances. We’re bringing the Word of God to people who want it, obviously, or they wouldn’t be here.” And he was not happy when the mayor of the town ordered his fliers taken down stating “The mayor ordered our fliers to be taken down. When did they start religious censorship?”
It all sounds like the same statements made by the Catholic, Mormon, Southern Baptist and other Christian Churches when defending their hatred of homosexuality. Somehow, laws granting rights to LGBT people are violating their religious freedoms. Indeed, it is violating their rights to be bigots.
From the information that is out there, Christian Identity Ministries is a Euro-centric Orthodox form of Christianity that abhors homosexuality and racial intermingling.
