Florida To Get Access To Federal Illegal Immigrant List

Supporters of Florida’s voter purge have complained that the state would not be scatter-gunning denials of registration to thousands of registered voters if they could just get access to the Federal illegal immigration database.

The Feds and Florida have reached an agreement that will allow Florida access to the Department of Homeland Security database. Now, the fun really starts.

Any idea how many José Gomezes there are in the Western hemisphere? There is a reason all full Spanish-style names include the mother’s maiden name. Too damned many Gomezes and Delgados (my grandfather’s name) and whatevers. Without the mother’s maiden name it is very difficult to distinquish between two persons. In America, people have either dropped the mother’s name or have been stuck using it because of immigration officials who didn’t know any better, as my grandfather did.

This happens in any church-heavy culture. In Catholic countries, the most popular first names have historically be derivatives of Joseph and Mary. In Latin Catholic countries, add Jesus. In Islam the most popular names are Mohammed and Fatima. This is why surnames are complex mini-genealogies in these countries. Saddam Hussein’s surname wasn’t Hussein, but al-Tikriti, his tribal name. Then there were a few additional al’s and bin’s to distinguish him other Saddam al-Tikritis.

Without full proper names and verified birth dates and places, any database consisting of just names is flawed in the extreme. We saw that when the man formerly called Cat Stevens was detained at an airport for having the same name, Yusef Islam, as a known terrorist who spells it differently. Oh, yes, let’s not forget variations in spelling and transliteration errors especially from Arabic.

Florida Governor Rick Scott is still, very vaguely, saying “We’ve already confirmed that non-citizens have voted in past elections here in Florida.” Yup, the first round of voter purges found 100 improperly registered Floridians and four – FOUR!!! – illegal votes cast, one in each of four elections. No entity has been able to provide any actual proof of the alleged “rampant voter fraud” that the right wing claims. All the studies have shown illegal vote numbers so small they are statistically non-existent, as in Florida’s known illegal votes amounting to 0.000004% of the votes cast.

So, the people of Florida can now expect that they will be getting notifications that they cannot vote if they share a name with some illegal immigrant, even though the Florida voter may have been voting since World War II and is forty years older.

There are only 16 weeks left until the Presidential election. It is time all those organizations that have registered voters in the past put all their efforts into securing the necessary documents and identifications for voters. Help those already registered while registering new voters. It is just as important as the efforts put into transporting voters to the polls in November.
