Gunman Kills 12, Wounds Fifty At CO “The Dark Knight Rises” Showing

P14-45 Handgun

Alleged gunman James Holmes opened fire and set off an unknown gas in a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver during the midnight opening of “The Dark Knight Rises”. Twelve people were killed and at least fifty more were injured. The attack apparently occurred during a fight scene in the movie as many of the moviegoers thought that it was part of the show until a silhouette appeared in front of the screen.

Holmes was arrested shortly after the attack, which happened approximately half an hour into the movie. He was wearing a gas mask and a kevlar vest.

Shayla Roeder, a witness, said that she saw a teenage girl on the ground bleeding outside the theater and told reporters that “She just had this horrible look in her eyes …. We made eye contact and I could tell she was not all right.” Jennifer Seeger told NBC’s “Today” that “I told my friend `we’ve got to get out of here,’ but then he shot people trying to go out the exits.” Holmes made his way up the aisle firing.

A three-month-old infant is among those wounded, as are several children. Victims are also being treated for chemical exposure from the canisters thrown by Holmes. Not all of the victims appear to have been in the room where the attack started, and the FBI is saying that there is no indication of any connection to a terrorist group.

The Paris premiere of the movie has been canceled.
