MSNBC Host Ed Schultz’ Wife Has Ovarian Cancer

In the above video not only do you hear the words of Ed Schultz, but see the pictures of Jessica Tandy, Loretta Young, Madeline Kahn, Ann Dunham (President Obama’s mother), Gilda Radner, and Kathy Bates. What these women and Ed Schultz’ wife Wendy all have in common is that they were diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Of those women, only Kathy Bates has survived the horrible disease- one that kills many women but is rarely discussed.

Schultz took to his radio show, which is being guest hosted by Mike Papantonio, stating that “It’s been a real jolt to say the least. It shakes you to your bones. But she’s a tough girl, and she went through surgery yesterday. The doctors feel like they got all of it…but we’ve got a long way to go.”

Schultz is having to step back from his MSNBC and radio shows, and he is likely to be off the air for some time. He stated that “Doing a radio and a TV show isn’t exactly what I’m thinking about right now. I’m going to be with my wife thorugh all of this. . .”You lose track of time, you lose track of what you’re doing, and everything changes.”

Ovarian cancer is, of course, limited to just women. Breast cancer strikes men upon occasion. Unfortunately, unlike breast cancer, ovarian cancer has had a lot less coverage. In 2010, there were some 21,880 new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed in the United States and 13,850 died of it.

My aunt died of ovarian cancer at age 65. She had never borne children. My good friend Pat was diagnosed with 4th stage ovarian cancer 4 years ago, age 50. She had surgery, a chemo trial, took up organic diet, has done very well until January, when cancer returned and she took chemo, got off it because of side effects, seems to be doing well. Not a nice disease.

      Anne,

You have my condolences. While my family has never been touched by ovarian cancer, we have been hurt by other forms of cancer and it is never nice.
