The Republican War on Women continued unabated Monday night in North Carolina where Republicans overrode the veto of Governor Bev Perdue of a bill that would have defunded Planned Parenthood. This is the second time that North Carolina has tried to defund Planned Parenthood. A judge blocked a provision that would have done that last year noting that the state cannot single out a particular health provider.
This time, the bill prevents the government from contracting with private providers of family planning services. This effectively cuts funding to Planned Parenthood. As with everywhere that Republicans have pushed to defund Planned Parenthood, the defunding will do nothing to stop the group from providing abortion services since those are not paid for by government funds. Instead, the defunding of the organization will cut into the ability by the clinics to provide birth control, cancer screenings, pap smears and other important medical services.
Paige Johnson, the spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina stated “If we aren’t able to figure something out and replace this funding, this will affect the price and availability of services and prescription drugs for patients. We won’t be able to provide the walk-in care we currently provide.”
The new bill redirects the state family planning funding into county health departments. According to the Huffington Post “Johnson said it was unclear whether the judge’s 2011 injunction against the defunding provision would apply to the new budget, now that it doesn’t specifically name Planned Parenthood. ‘We’re looking at all legal options,’ she said.”
