Twenty-thousand signatures? The National Organization for Marriage has taken to their blog in order to thank Charlie Butts and One News Now for covering their Dump General Mills campaign and announce that it now has over 20,000 signatures! Isn’t this exciting!
Oh wait…what’s the opposite of exciting?
NOM’s Jonathan Baker explained why they are pushing for a boycott of General Mills stating that “We started DumpGeneralMills.com, working on the website. It is live now, and it gives folks a chance to come together with other like-minded individuals and tell General Mills that we don’t appreciate their stance.” The website provides a list of all the products that General Mills has on the market. It’s an easy to find list- just check it out at the General Mills site, in fact.
To put this in perspective, NOM has, basically, gotten as many people to sign this petition as live in South St. Paul, Minnesota. They have about five thousand more signatures than the entire population of Brunswick, Georgia, or about three thousand more than Rutland, Vermont. Manhattan has a population of 1.5 million, and NOM has about one eightieth of that signed on to their petition.
In other words…they don’t have a lot of people signing on to dump General Mills. It’s kind of the same debacle that they’re having with Starbucks. Boycotts just don’t work any more.
