Megan Rapinoe decided to announce to the world that she is dating Sarah Walsh. What makes this declaration of love so important is that Rapinoe is an Olympics soccer star and one of the most recognizable and popular players on the US Women’s soccer team. Walsh is also a soccer player- for Australia. They two have been a dating for a year now.

She said in an interview with Out.com that “I feel like sports in general are still homophobic, in the sense that not a lot of people are out. I feel like everyone is really craving people to come out. People want – they need – to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good old U.S. of A.”

Rapinoe has not exactly been silent about her sexuality. Those around her have known, but she’s never actually been asked by the media. This might have something to do with the limited reach of soccer in the United States- except for every four years when soccer becomes rather popular as the Olympics approaches.

Luckily for Rapinoe, though, she and her girlfriend may be able to get some time together in London, but they won’t be playing against each other as Australia’s team did not qualify this time around, apparently.
