Mary Kristene Chapa has left the hospital where she has been since her girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, was killed and she was shot and left for dead. The couple were shot in the head by an unknown attacker in Violet Andrews Park on 22 June. The police have stated that they do not know the motive for the attack, but keep stating that the attack was not homophobic in nature.
Chapa suffered serious brain injuries in the attack. She was finally recovered enough to help a police sketch artist come up with a rendering of the assailant. She still has trouble with her sight and speech, but is apparently improving.
It took a while before Chapa’s family broke the news about her girlfriend’s murder. Hilario, her brother, stated that:
“She didn’t know about Mollie for the longest time, but we finally decided to tell her. She was brokenhearted, very upset.
“They told us you have to let her cry. I didn’t want to tell her not to cry. But Mollie’s father [Mario] is a very good man, considering he lost his daughter. He comes to visit her and when he does she gets emotional but he is supporting her. He wants to go visit her in rehab.”
