Apologies if I am wrong but this is the impression from someone with family in Syria.

It is very relevant to understand what has taken place in the years before 2011. In particular to help understand why China and Russia are taking the stance they are takig.

It is really stunning that you might believe there is no historical perspective to the current conflict.
