JoCasta Zamarripa is a Democratic state Representative in Wisconsin. She is the only Hispanic in the Legislature there…and she is bisexual. This is, of course, the state that could see the first lesbian elected to the United States Senate. She is facing one primary challenger and no Republicans in her bid for a second term.
Zamarripa told reporters in an interview that “It has always been my goal in office to be transparent and honest with my constituents. But before the primary in 2010, I didn’t have the valor and courage to come out. I feel remiss that I didn’t come out then.”
She is still certain that she would have won the seat that she currently has even if she had come out in 2010. She succeeded Pedro Colon, now a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge. She is also confident that she will defeat challenger Laura Manriquez in her upcomign primary.
The thirty-six year old is single, but also stated that “It’s part of my life, like being a south sider and the only Hispanic in the Legislature, and I’m happy to share it with my constituents.”
