A group of Muslims had planned on holding an end-of-Ramadan celebration, Eid-ul-Fitr, at New Dorp Beach Park on Staten Island, New York’s most suburban borough. This year, Eid-ul-Fitr began at sundown on Saturday and extended through sundown on Sunday. The community plans called for a family-friendly gathering at the beach during the day on Sunday.

But as the community gathered in the park Sunday morning, they found it littered with pieces of uncooked bacon. Like Jews, Muslims are forbidden to eat or handle pork. It’s an admonition that made perfect sense at the time because pigs are prone to carrying trichinosis and eating pork tended to kill people especially in the desert. There were three opened packages of bacon at the site.

The New York City Police Department are investigating the incident as a hate crime with possible links to an internet posting that threatened “I am going to walk my pet pig and I am gonna let him shit…just in time for morning prayers.”

I guess we should be grateful that this was a childish waste of $20 worth of meat instead of a shooting rampage.
