Citadel Grad, Santorum Staffer Accused Of Sexually Harassing Men

Two underclassmen at The Citadel, South Carolina’s public military university, have reported four separate incidents of unwanted sexual advances. The incidents occurred in 2010 and 2011. The accused is a recent graduate and a former staffer on Rick Santorum’s failed Presidential campaign.

No criminal charges were filed because the two men who reported the incidents did not want to pursue the case. The incidents included sexual propositioning and unwanted touching.

Former Marine Captain Anu Bhagwati, the executive director of Service Women’s Action Network, stated “Values are instilled in future officers at institutions like The Citadel. The Citadel and other military universities cultivate the future leaders of the military, so in order to eliminate sexual assault in the military it must be eliminated at the schools first.”

The Citadel has kept the names of the victims and the accused confidential, but they have asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate. They are also facing civil suits with regards to their failure to respond to reports that former cadet and camp counselor Louis “Skip” Reveille engaged in wide spread sexual abuse. Reveille pled guilty to those charges this summer and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

SWAN notes that “Unlike students at federal service academies, students at state-supported military colleges can bring civil claims against their schools under Title IX (as well as Constitutional and tort claims). The Feres Doctrine prevents service members or students at federal service academies from pursuing civil remedies.”
