The National Organization for Marriage poured a lot of money into trying to defeat Mark Grisanti, Stephen M. Saland, and Roy J. McDonald. The three New York Republicans voted for same-sex marriage last year. A fourth Republican, James Alesi, chose not to run for reelection stating that the health of the Republican Party made him no long wish to be associated with it.
The results for Mark Grisanti’s primary were the best. The first-term state Senator won his reelection bid 60% to 40%. The results for Saland, though, were less thrilling. He is currently ahead of his NOM backed rival, but only 50.2% to 49.8% or around 42 votes. State Senator McDonald, though, was behind his NOM-backed rival, Kathleen A. Marchione, 49.5% to 50.5%.
The National Organization for Marriage poured millions of dollars into defeating these three state senators.
