Perhaps Rick Santorum should realize that there are smart people who attend church and have families. Other than that, Santorum’s points may actually be accurate. At the Values Voters Summit, former Republican Senator Santorum claimed that “smart people”, “the media”, and “colleges and universities” would not be on their side supposedly because “they want to tell you what to do”, and that the conservative movement will be supported by “the church and the family.”

The notion that colleges and universities are hot beds of Liberal Thinking has not been true since, oh, about 1975 or so. Berkeley Breathed, the creator of Bloom County, pointed that out in one of his early strips. I attended college in the South, and both of the colleges I went to were fairly Conservative. There were even a fair number of cars with “In Case Of Rapture This Car Will Be Empty” bumper stickers, and the poli-sci and art professors at the little college I use to work at were both Republicans. The economics professor at the college was a devout Christian who refused to ever talk to me after I came out.

To say that the poli-sci and art profs weren’t smart would be an insult since both men were very intelligent. We had some fun conversations, in fact. In fact, I took three courses from the poli-sci prof, namely undergrad and grad-level Political Terrorism and grad-level Congress and the Political Parties.

Of course, both men were more liberal when it came to social issues, but that’s besides the point to Santorum.
