Still No Season 3, A Little Rant

The 15th has come and gone and still no sign of Season 3. For fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the wait is annoying. Perhaps Hasbro is having trouble getting everything set up? Perhaps they are having difficulty dealing with the popularity of a series which they expected to be aimed at young girls. Of course, having a scene straight out of Benny Hill probably doesn’t help:

For that matter…what about Star Wars:

Come on, Hasbro, let us know what is going on so that we can, you know, know when the wait will be over. It’s obvious that the series will be heading out before December since the DVD for the first two episodes of the third season will be released in time for Christmas along with Season 1 of the series.

Ok, that’s the end of my rant. It’s just not nice to mess with your fanbase.

Go ahead, ask George Lucas sometime.

Oh, and another thing. This rant says that Hasbro may be having trouble dealing with the popularity of the show. How can their show being popular be a bad thing?

And it also says that these two scenes that parodies Benny Hill and Star Wars didn’t help. How was those references bad? A lot of cartoons make pop culture references. Could I have a little clarity on that too?

Actually, there are times when a series can become popular with a demographic that it didn’t expect, and it can be hard for the company behind it to change directions suddenly. Those parodies are part of what makes the series so popular among adults, and Hasbro really didn’t expect the whole Brony phenomenon.

Actually, there are times when a series can become popular with a demographic that it didn’t expect, and it can be hard for the company behind it to change directions suddenly.

If the formula worked to get it so popular, changing it to try and “fit”, when it already quite obviously does, is going to destroy what they have going.

They miscalculated the target demographic with what they were releasing. If they try and change the show now, it will ruin it, and within a year, the show will lose all popularity and be off the air.

Oh. Thanks for clearing that up for me Nissl.

So I was looking at the other comments here and I was wondering. So since They have such a huge fanbase in adult audiences, are they planning on making the show darker with more adult content in season 4? I don’t mean Family Guy-type content. I mean Secret of NIMH or most of Miyazaki’s movies type content.

You know, that is true. There are usually 65 episodes for successful kids shows. I have been noticing that a lot with some shows I like. So they were planning on stopping there first, but then due to popularity decided to go for another whole season? Awesome!

I thought they pushed things a bit darker in S2 with some of the crazy faces and freakout scenes and things like Celestia getting knocked out. They have said they won’t do “heavy” themes like war and death. We’ll never get an episode about where Applejack’s parents are.

However, ***spoilers*** according to writer M.A. Larson, there are “plans” regarding a recurring villain sometime in either S3 or S4. There are also leaked S3 backgrounds showing a ruined, boarded up Ponyville.

OH MY GOD! THAT IS SO AWESOME! PONYVILLE IN RUINS! I CANNOT FREAKIN’ WAIT TO SEE THAT!

And I too have heard they’re going to do a recurring villain! I can’t wait for that! I wonder how awesome this villain will be!

It is kind of annoying that pretty much every villain that’s been on this show has only stuck around for just one episode, two for some of them. Diamond Tiara’s the only villain so far I think who’s been in more than two episodes! This show needs more bada** villains! And I’d love to see some of the old ones return, especially Discord and Chrysalis, and Trixie, and Gilda, and the Diamond Dogs, especially Rover!

You know, here’s some themes I’d like to see in future villains:
-A set of six villains who are the polar opposites / matches for the mane six, just as Captain Gutt and his crew were for Manny and his heard. Some fans have come up with a concept for the opposites of the elements of harmony: The Elements of Discord. I’d love to see something like that!
-A villain who doesn’t know the wonders of friendship and bonds and just uses his servants and allies as tools.
-A villain who maybe is an earth pony, who is frustrated at being the least special of the three races, and is trying to get the Earth Ponies to the top by bringing down the unicorns and pegasi. This introduces a theme of racism. I don’t know if the show has done anything like this yet.

WHY ONLY 13 EPISODES?? THEY HAVE A FAN BASE! THEY ARE MAKING A TON OF MONEY!
    GOD DAMN IT!

I suspect that they may be moving to the same kind of set up that we see with Futurama- half length seasons. It’s how the British do their series.

If you believe my “guy who knows a guy” on Reddit, Hasbro only ordered 13 because of all of the turnover on the writing team. It was an obvious decision to get up to 65 episodes, which is the standard for syndication on kids’ shows. They decided the quality was good, and the fanbase kept growing, so they’ve ordered a full length season 4.

Just for clarification, it may have to do with production. It takes about a month alone with a whole team of animators to make one episode. Not to mention that they go through an extensive storyboarding phase beforehand where they hand-draw all keyframes, denote motion, and whatnot while planning the plot. Add in the voice recording and music/SFX, and you have at least 10 weeks spent on one 22 minute episode.

There are only 3 studios, 1 in Canada and 2 in the Philippines. That means that it would take 10 months to produce 13 episodes, if each two studios could produce 1 every 9 weeks and the other 1 every 10. That is almost a year spent making less than 5 hours of video.

Just saying, it’s a lot of work, and they may not want to do it forever.

Villain, I hate to be the bearer or bad news but it won’t be for at least 3 weeks. We would have advance warning from the TV listings.

I know. It is getting annoying. I’ve got plenty of other things to keep me busy until the season starts.

I’ve been hearing rumors though that it’s suppose to start on Sept. 22nd. This Saturday!

If it doesn’t happen by then, then I got nothing. Nothing we can do but wait.

They’re trying to stretch out the 13 episodes they have as much as possible.

I hate in between seasons since MLP is the only thing that keeps me sane. Since I am a 21 year old adult with PTSD, the show is the only thing keeping my mind calm and I can be far a way from anything close to reminding me Iraq.

    I can wait.

I enjoy the time between seasons alot more than during.

…Plus I need to finish a project before S3 starts.
