The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute has released polling information which indicates that support for same-sex marriage has increased ten points since 2010. It currently stands at 43.6% in support of same-sex marriage, 31.8% in support of civil unions, and 20.2% in opposition to both.
Rick Garcia, Director of The Equal Marriage Illinois Project, stated “This now confirms that a minority of Illinoisans do not support equal marriage in Illinois. These numbers are such a huge leap forward in such a short period time. This is the same trend we are seeing across the country, as more and more people embrace the idea that gay couples deserve the equal responsibilities and protections that marriage affords.”
Representative Greg Harris has introduced marriage equality legislation into the Illinois House, and it is being supported by TEMIP as well as The Civil Rights Agenda and other pro-equality groups in the state.
