I’ve been a fan of Ellen DeGeneres since before she came out of the closet on her 1st show (in an airport, accidentally, over a loudspeaker!) because she was funny and the only comedian I’d seen that didn’t tell dirty jokes. She was brilliant because she made you think; whether it was a dirty thought or not, you thought when she spoke. Her comedy was plain, simple, relatable and hilarious! At the time I was still young and learning what “gay” really meant. Until it became a sexuality issue, I’d always related very well to Ellen because I thought she was like me; an awkward girl that had bad luck with dating.
When it became national news that Ellen, in fact, likes girls….well,….nothing changed for me. My opinion of Ellen was still the same. She was still awesome. I was still awkward. So was she. I didn’t understand what the big deal was. So she liked girls instead of boys. That didn’t mean that the awkwardness and bad luck in dating went away, it just meant that it was directed at someone other than who I’d originally thought. I still related to her.
*heavy sigh*
I never have understood why people got upset about this. I do understand why Ellen is still considered brave for what she did. She’s still awesome. …and let’s not forget the best part; Ellen is happily married to a talented, gorgeous, intelligent woman (actress Portia de Rossi) that loves her for who she is AND she has a hit show on television because AMERICA LOVES HER. :p
On October 30th, Ellen to Washington, D.C. to receive the highest honor in Comedy, The Mark Twain Prize. This is what she had to say, on her show, about her experience.
Congratulations Ellen! You deserve it.
