And now for something completely silly.
Last night’s debate between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney produced the last in a series of debate related memes that, in this case, appears to be a positive one for the President.
President Obama is correct in that the US has fewer horses and bayonets in the military than they did back in 1917. Romney is also sort of correct in that we have fewer ships too. The thing is that there is a reason for this. We do not need them, or at least as much as we use to. For instance, the military is now fully mechanized so our military has a mechanized cavalry. Our Marines still use bayonets, but not to the extent that we did back in World War I when our troops were expected to use their rifles as spears in close combat.
We also do not have as many ships today as we use to because of the lack of need for ships. We have not had as huge a need for ships as we did back between 1776 and 1960. Since Vietnam, the bulk of our troops and materials have been shipped by plane not by boat. We no longer need troop transports, garbage scows, and so forth. They just are not practical for our military.
During World War II, the US had a grand total of thirty aircraft carriers. Almost a third of those didn’t make it through the war. From 1945 until 2000, the Navy proceeded to decommission and scrap most of the carrier fleet because we did not need them. Carriers are not as needed now that the US has bases everywhere and even where we don’t, we just need to set up shop somewhere and fly from an allied base.
And finally, the finest army in all of Equestria (what, you thought I’d ignore the memes featuring My Little Pony?)
