When I was a child (8 y/o) I moved from Vermont to Florida. It would be the second time in my life where I had encountered people whose skin was colored differently from my own. My mother took me to a theme park and as we stood at the back of a sea of people, all different skin colors, my mother worried about my reaction to them. Would I be frightened of our differences since I’d never seen more than one person without pink skin like my own?
I surveyed the crowd of colorful skin in beautiful brown tones and finally I tugged on her shirt and said very innocently “Mommy, We are all like my Crayons.“. —I hope to never lose that wonderment in people that are new to me.
Watching Doctor Who reminds me that my wonderment and insatiable curiosity are not always a bad thing, and I hope that the good doctor and his message are something my son will connect to as well as I have. “Acceptance of All” is always a good lesson to learn.
…and I can’t wait to meet my first 3-headed monster!
