Pope Benedict XVI made his annual Christmas address to the Vatican bureaucracy in which he continued his attacks on homosexuality stating that people were manipulating their ‘God-given identities’ in order to suit ‘sexual choices’ and in the process, destroying the very “essence of the human creature”.

Benedict stated:

“People dispute the idea that they have a nature, given to them by their bodily identity, that serves as a defining element of the human being. They deny their nature and decide that it is not something previously given to them, but that they make it for themselves.”

“The manipulation of nature, which we deplore today where our environment is concerned, now becomes man’s fundamental choice where he himself is concerned.”

It may seem rather baffling given that homosexuality has been shown to be immutable in a large portion of people who are lesbian or gay, and that it appears to be human nature to be lesbian or gay.

This is the second time this week that Benedict has railed against same-sex marriage and comes as France is busy considering and fighting over the idea of same-sex marriage. It also comes more than a month after the issue won big in the United States. The Vatican believes that homosexuality is a disorder even though they often claim that lesbians and gays should be treated with the same compassion and dignity that one assigns the mentally ill.

Benedict, the former head of the successor to the Inquisition, has been waging a crusade against homosexuality since he took the office of Pope. He continued to attack homosexuality claiming that sex and gender are “no longer a given element of nature that man has to accept and personally make sense of: it is a social role that we choose for ourselves, while in the past it was chosen for us by society,” and that God made man and woman as a specific duality, and “an essential aspect of what being human is all about. . .Man and woman as created realities, as the nature of the human being, no longer exist. Man calls his own nature into question. From now on he is merely spirit and will.”

The Vatican’s attempts to enforce the Procrustean Society of boxes and forced mental dismemberment have largely fallen flat and only been listened to by those already inclined to hate homosexuality.
