Is anyone surprised that James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, is blaming gay marriage, abortion, and a lack of God being forced on people for why the Sandy Hook Massacre occurred? Many on the Right are busy pushing their religion at a time of tragedy because they believe that a time of tragedy is the best time to get backsides in the pews. Dobson stated:
Our country really does seem in complete disarray. I’m not talking politically, I’m not talking about the result of the November sixth election; I am saying that something has gone wrong in America and that we have turned our back on God.
I mean millions of people have decided that God doesn’t exist, or he’s irrelevant to me and we have killed 54 million babies and the institution of marriage is right on the verge of a complete redefinition. Believe me, that is going to have consequences, too.
And a lot of these things are happening around us, and somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now, but I am going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the scripture and on God almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what’s going on.
You will, of course, notice that there is not a single mention of rampant Capitalism, materialism, or greed in there. Never mind the fact that the gun industry and gun lobby have been pushing both a fear of government removal of guns and a fear of the “other” as a means to rake in huge profits. In fact, many Christian faiths have replaced the Prophets with a ton of Profits.
Many people like Dobson started their careers going after violence in the media, but rapidly shifted focus away from that because it got in the way of profits. It is not surprising, for instance, that One Million Moms, a subsidiary of the American Family Association, would condemn Person of Interest for featuring a lesbian couple, but not for the inherent violence in the show. Unlike true Christians who abhor violence and greed, many of these groups love to push gun rights and the fear of the government taking people’s guns away instead of teaching non-violence like Christ did.
Dobson and other Christian Conservatives are quick to blame anything that they can turn a buck from even though they should be speaking out against the very ills that are really causing these problems.
Christ taught compassion and tolerance while people like Dobson teach hatred and intolerance.
