Star Trek Into Darkness marks the second of the reboot movies. The trailers have finally hit the web with more to come, but it is unclear who the villain is other than he will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock. He is also playing Smaug and The Necromancer in the second Hobbit films.
There are some big franchises out there, and it is interesting to see how they are connected. Cumberbatch connects Christopher Lee to Star Trek via The Hobbit…okay, maybe not that interesting.
A fair number of people have noted that they are disappointed with the trailer given that it seems to focus on action instead of drama, but the same can be said for 2009′s Star Trek’s trailers, and the movie itself was incredibly complex.
What little we do know about Star Trek Into Darkness is that the movie’s plot seems to tread close to the same themes as three of the more successful Star Trek films- namely Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, Star Trek: First Contact, and Star Trek (2009). It appears to be a story about revenge.
In fact, a scene from the Japanese subtitled trailer has some tongues wagging that Zachary Quinto will be hanging up his Spock ears with this movie. The scene appears to involve the recreation of an iconic scene in which Kirk lays his hand on a pane of glass while Spock gives the familiar Vulcan salute.
