The possible confirmation of former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary has been one of those events that has really torn at the LGBT Community. Not all groups have been happy about the decision, while others have taken a wait and see approach. OutServe-SLDN seems pleased that Hagel has reiterated his commitment to doing everything under current law to provide LGB service members and their families with equal benefits in his confirmation hearing today.
Hagel stated he would moved quickly once confirmed to try and create greater equality for LGB service members and their families. OS-SLDN Executive Director and Army Veteran Allyson Robinson stated about this that “After two years of equivocation and delay by Pentagon leadership, it is gratifying to see Senator Hagel show the kind of clear, unambiguous support for our service members and their families we saw today. It is an historic day when issues critical to gay and lesbian service members and their families take center stage in a confirmation hearing for Secretary of Defense.”
OS-SLDN and many others have called on the Pentagon to move on greater LGB equality over the last two years, but with no avail.
