As the old saying goes “go big or go home.” President Barack Obama unveiled several points of action when it comes to his sweeping efforts at limiting gun violence in the United States. Among those points are four major ones. His proposals would require criminal background checks on all public and private gun sales, the banning of military-style assault weapons, the limiting of ammunition magazines to ten rounds, and stronger penalties for gun trafficking.
In his speech to the nation, Obama stated quite frankly that “This is our first task as a society: keeping our children safe. This is how we will be judged. We can’t put this off any longer.”
None of the proposals appear to be ready to address the culture of violence that has permeated the American psyche since before the Founding. However, they address four key elements: law enforcement, availability, school safety and mental health.”
Among the other proposals Obama put forth are bans on sales of armor-piercing and other ammunition designed specifically for combat; providing greater mental health services, including in schools; allocating more funds for police officers among several other ideas. The cost is expected to be only around $500 million, with some of that already coming from the current budgets.
Obama is already planning on moving ahead with some of the proposals including executive orders requiring that federal agencies hand over all relevant data for background checks; providing better training for active shooting situations to all first responders and school officials; and to have the Centers for Disease Control do additional research into gun violence.
Obama said “I intend to use whatever weight this office holds to make them a reality. If there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try.”
These proposals came as the NRA stooped to a new low by targeting President Obama’s daughters in a new ad trying to drum up support for their insane notion of putting armed guards in every school. In the ad they say “Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security.”
Nearly every school shooting in the last two decades has occurred at a school with at least one armed guard. The guards could not respond in time and the shooter was often dead or done long before the guards arrived on the scene. In Sandy Hook, the only way to protect the school would have been to have put in bullet resistant glass into the windows. The NRA has gotten little traction with the idea of armed guards in every school.
It should be noted that the Obama daughters enjoy Secret Service protection because of their high profile and because they are at risk of being targeted in order to hurt their father.
