The Republican Party has proven themselves to be hypocrites, and this is especially true on the subject of abortion. House Speaker John Boehner spoke to an anti-women’s rights rally in Washington DC via video in which he stated that these anti-women’s rights activists must commit themselves “to doing everything [they] can to protect the sanctity of life”. The first thing he wants to do is make the Hyde Amendment permanent. That would prevent federal funds from being used to pay for abortions except in the case of rape or incest.
He also said “For the new Congress, that means bringing together a bipartisan pro-life majority and getting to work. In accordance with the will of the people, we will again work to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, formally codifying the Hyde Amendment.” He also said that he wanted to make it a national priority to “help make abortion a relic of the past,” and said “Let that be one of our most fundamental goals this year.”
Also at the rally was also Senator Rand Paul who stated “Our nation is adrift, adrift in a wilderness where right and wrong have become subservient to a hedonism of the moment. I believe our country is in need of a spiritual cleansing. We much preach a gospel so full of compassion, a gospel so full of justice that it cannot be resisted. Then and only then will the law again protect the innocent.”
In truth, what these men and women propose and push is nothing more than a plan to drive abortion underground again so that they could never see it again. It will not end abortion. It will just make it seem to go away.
The Republican Party’s pro-poverty/pro-corporate agenda causes more women to seek abortions by increasing poverty for people, and one of the biggest reasons why abortions occur is because of economic reasons, not hedonism like Paul claims. It is because these women cannot afford to raise these children, and the alternatives? The Republicans have done so much to make public adoption services into a nightmare and child protective services unable to function that people are not going to want to put children up for adoption.
Child care services have been so hampered by the Republicans that parents cannot afford to raise children and leave them in the care of others. They have pursued anti-family agendas by keeping people from having living wages so that one parent can stay home to raise children.
Two decades ago, President Bill Clinton stated that he wanted to make abortion safe, available, and rare. You do that by having good jobs for people, affordable housing, affordable food, good social safety networks, and all the things that the Republicans oppose. You make it so that abortions are only used when needed. Remove the stigma from having safe sex
In the end, though, the Republicans want this nation to go back to the 1890′s. No healthcare, no living wages, no safety network, nothing for these families. They want to go back to the days when labor was cheep, and corporations and religious institutions trampled on the rights of everyone else.
That will not prevent abortions. Just consult the newspapers of the 1890′s.
