Another week, another Top Chef.
Let us start with the fact that you have 11 hours in which to save one of your favorite chefs. Just tweet using #savechefkuniko to save Chef Kuniko or #savechefbart to save Chef Bart, or you can cast your vote at http://www.bravotv.com/top-chef/season-10/vote/save-a-chef
And here is the preview for next week (unfortunately, no LGR recap next week seeing as how I will be away from my television for a week):

Ah…knife skills. The guest judge is master knifesmith Bob Kramer. In the Quickfire challenge involved sharpening a knife to razor sharpness. Knife skills are very important for being a chef- even for a person cooking at home. If a knife is dull, it can actually be more dangerous than a sharp knife because a sharp knife will cut through whatever they should without so much as a bit of resistence where as a dull knife can slip.
Josie is disqualified from the competition because she nicked her finger. The Green Team was disqualified. Unfortunately, Red Team, which had Josie on it, lost by 2 potatoes. The Blue Team won and had to French a rabbit with a large knife. That is not easy. Micah won the Quickfire saying that, somehow, working with the rabbit was a Zen moment. He won a Bob Kramer knife, which is about $4,000 worth of blade.
Ah, for the Elimination Challenge, they took a trip down memory lane. They were assigned a memorable moment/dish from the past nine seasons in order to make a healthier version of the past dishes. Ah, this challenge certainly seems scary. John goes down memory lane about Anthony Bordaine. Josh gets…er…more pork. Josie loved the challenge because her parents suffer from some health difficulties.
The big problem can be balancing health with taste, and that is not looking like it’s going to be happening at some point. John made a point about the fact that risoto is actually pretty easy to make. For Stephan, it was making a healthy grilled cheese sandwich. Josie got Season 1, Stephan Season 2, and John Season 3. Josie’s chicken was considered a little bland while Stephan’s sandwich and soup did not meet the healthiness standard. John’s risoto did not do well at all.
Sheldon got beef carpaccio. Elizabeth got scallops. Josh got pork tenderloin. Those are Seasons 4,5,6. Josh’s pork actually did well. Sheldon’s did not do well with his dish with the beef looking rather like it had been through a grinder and the rest not doing well. Elizabeth had the problem of her scallops not being entirely fresh, and that did not fly well with the judges who also found the dish to be very lacking and the scallops off.
Brooke had salmon, Kristen had chicken pot pie, and Micah had duck breast. Micah’s dish got a lot of praise, but not overly the rest of the dish. Kristen did a great job according to everyone, but she did not get everyone the same dish. Brooke’s salmon did well also, in part because of the pea puree.
Josh, John, Kristen, Lizzie and Brooke are all called before the judges which is about half of the chefs. Josh, Brooke and Kristen cooked the best dishes. Josh finally cooked pork properly. Kristen won again creating a healthy chicken pot pie.
Unfortunately, that leaves two. John and Lizzie were ones on the chopping block. John tried to make an issue of the equipment and Josh noted that there were flat pots. Lizzie didn’t make an excuse. She stated flatly that she was sorry. The twist got to be that John and Lizzie had to cook off against each other…and do so with a healthier pork burger.
As a note, I’ve cooked rizoto in a concave pan and gotten it to come out perfectly.
Lizzie grabbed chicken breast to make her dish. John grabbed the majority of the dill that Lizzie grabbed. Lizzie, I have to give kudos to, for making a burger without a bun. That’s how I have to eat them myself since I’m gluten intolerant. John’s burger was a bit overcooked. Lizzie’s burger apparently was really good since she managed to take a difficult ingredient and make it moist.
It would actually be lovely to see challenges that involve not using specific ingredients instead of using them. There’s a lot of people with food sensitivities.
John got cut. He is not happy with being cut, but a lot of people are upset when they get cut.

I wasn’t really impressed with the “most memorable dishes” from the past seasons, I’m sure they could’ve found dishes more deserving than Jamie’s scallops. I was a little disappointed in this episode but I’m glad Kristen pulled out the win. I have a new work schedule at DISH and will miss next week’s episode. Luckily, my DISH Hopper is already set to record the season and with over 2,000 hours of entertainment space I never miss my favorite shows. I like to watch this show in multiple rooms; I usually start in the living room and finish watching in the kitchen, this show always inspires me to cook more.
