What do House Speaker John Boehner, Maggie Gallagher and Al-Qaida have in common? A loathing of President Barack Obama’s decision to back same-sex marriage! That’s right, the terrorist organization behind 9/11 took to the latest issue of their English-language magazine Inspire to slam President Obama on his stance regarding marriage equality.
Mother Jones printed Inspire’s graphic entitled “The Nation Standing on ‘No Values.’” In many ways, Inspire seems to echo the sentiments of groups like the Family Research Council, the American Family Association, and the National Organization for Marriage. Al-Qaida also goes after “gay congressman” Barney Frank, and cites polling that shows that American Catholics who do not attend Mass regularly are increasingly supportive of same-sex marriage.
Besides being incorrect about Frank who has retired from Congress, Al-Qaida also loves to make it clear that they are strictly about “traditional marriage”- just like the FRC, AFA, NOM, and many Republicans. Al-Qaida even tries to insult Frank calling him a “symbol of the American dream”.
Why bring this up at all? Al Qaeda “fundamentally believe[s] there is a moral decay because of Western cultural and social norms,” says Aaron Zelin, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “The issues of Western policy in the region loom larger for sure, but the socio-cultural issues are also important when one goes beyond the surface rhetoric.”
