Tomorrow begins the two days of oral arguments regarding same-sex marriage in the United States. Arguing for the dissolution of Proposition 8 will be current Solicitor General Donald Verrilli and former Solicitor General Ted Olsen. Attending the rally outside the court will be quite a number of people including many children of lesbian and gay parents. Arguing to uphold Prop 8 in the Supreme Court will be some lawyer who was wrapped up in the Iran-Contra affair.
The United For Marriage Rally will be taking place during the two oral arguments for same-sex marriage- US v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry. Tomorrow, Hollingsworth v. Perry will be argued and could result in several possible outcomes including same-sex marriage being legalized across the country; just in the states that currently have civil unions and California; or just California.
Family Equality Council has organized the rally and have filed a brief with the US Supreme Court. Steve Majors, FEC spokesman, stated “A generation of children raised successfully by LGBT parents are living proof about the importance of marriage—who better to speak about this issue than those who will benefit the most. National polls, leading policy experts and the public dialogue in our country all lead to the same conclusion: marriage strengthens all types of families.”
The rally comes on the heels of the American Academy of Pediatrics releasing a major statement about same-sex marriage.
Attending the rally tomorrow will be:
Ella Robinson, the adult daughter of Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson (Ret.), the nation’s first openly gay Bishop of a major Christian denomination.
Jo-Ann and Mary Jo Shain and their adult daughter, Aliya. Aliya’s parents have been together over 20 years.
Sarah Gogin, the adult daughter of two Catholic dads who have been together for more than 40 years.
