The Daily Mail out of London is in a lot of public trouble after the suicide of a transsexual elementary school teacher. Lucy Meadows was a teacher at St. Mary Magdalen’s Church of England. Born Nathan Upton, Meadows underwent a sex change over Christmas break, and returned to work as Lucy. After months of harassment, Meadows was found dead in her home on 19 March from an apparent suicide.
While there were other newspapers involved, the tabloid The Daily Mail was among the most slanderous regarding Meadows. The Daily Mail harassed her and Daily Mail columnist Richard Littlejohn attacked Meadows’ transition claiming it would have a “devastating effect” on her students. Of course, no word yet as to how Littlejohn feels about the effect that Meadows’ suicide will have on her students.
The Daily Mail has tried to scrub their site of Littlejohn’s column which read, in part, that “Why should they be forced to deal with the news that a male teacher they have always known as Mr Upton will henceforth be a woman called Miss Meadows?” So, instead, Littlejohn and the harassment of the media has meant that Meadows’ students have to deal with her death.
A petition has been started calling for The Daily Mail to apologize and to fire Littlejohn. It reads, in part, that “No one deserves to have their lives turned upside down for their gender identity being thrown into the national spotlight.” It currently has 31,887 signators.
Transsexuals have often been the subject of harassment in the media where their lives are often picked apart and destroyed for the sensationalist headlines that they can create.
