Grosse Pointe South High Cancels Santorum Speech

Rick Santorum is having a bit of a bad time right now. While he is revving up for a 2016 run at the Presidency, he is having problems finding places to make his speeches. Matt Outlaw, the principal of Grosse Pointe South High School, has canceled an all school assembly in which Santorum was suppose to be the featured speaker.

Outlaw had demanded from Santorum an advance copy of Santorum’s speech, scheduled for 24 April. When Santorum refused, the speech was canceled. Outlaw sent out an email telling the parents of the students that their children would have a normal day instead. Superintendent Tom Harwood supported the decision to cancel the speech. All questions were deferred to district spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon who told The Patch that these were some of the reasons for cancelling the speech:

Santorum’s speaking engagement history, which does not include a school across the country
Previous speakers, such as Martin Luther King Jr., spoke after school hours
School-day activities should remain neutral given the district is public and such a speaker is not neutral

The speech was organized by Young Americans for Freedom, a politically conservative student group. The decision to cancel the speech is, apparently, rather controversial. Some parents are supporting the cancellation while others are vocally opposed.

Santorum is known for his vehement anti-gay views. His social conservative views did not propel him very far in the 2012 Republican Presidential Primary. Indications are that Santorum is setting up for another run in 2016 in which he will run as a Social Conservative. He has also recently warned the Republican Party against embracing same-sex marriage and tried to fundraise off of the claim that he could persuade the Supreme Court to not strike down the Defense of Marriage Act and Prop 8. He currently claims that the Supreme Court will not strike either down.

Grosse Pointe is in Michigan and was the backdrop for the movie Grosse Point Blank, just to assuage your curiosity.
