Peter, Paul and Mary Homophobes? FRC Writer Thinks They’re Bigots

“Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam…” Apparently Family Research Council Senior Fellow Bob Morrison is wondering if mentions of “man and wife” or “husband and wife” or anything heteronormative like that qualifies as bigotry and homophobia?

He was wondering given the lyrics to “The Wedding Song” which was written by Paul Stookey for Peter Yarrow’s wedding and performed by Peter, Paul and Mary. ThinkProgress notes that Morrison wrote:

It’s an amazing song that must have been played at a million weddings since those halcyon days when this folk rock phenomenon hit the pop music scene. It’s wonderful just to consider the lyrics. “What shall be the meaning of becoming man and wife?” [...]

Question for the left: Are Peter, Paul, and Mary bigots, too? Is the mere fact that they knew what marriage was for fifty years enough to brand them as hate-filled? And just to stop this in its tracks, neither is Rob Reiner or any number of people who write heteronormative materials. Reiner, btw, was the director of The Princess Bride. Just because something is heteronormative does not mean that they are anti-gay.

For instance, Miami Dolphin’s Wide Receiver Mike Wallace tweeted a statement he later deleted saying “All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys.” His statement, which he apologized for saying that he was not bashing anyone, is overtly heteronormative, but it is not homophobic. Quite frankly, I don’t understand why women date men, but it doesn’t mean that I hate heterosexuals.

In fact, Peter, Paul and Mary are not bigots. ThinkProgress in their article pointed out that “Though Mary has passed away, Peter and Paul made this very clear to the National Organization for Marriage in 2010 when it used a recording of them singing Woody Guthrie’s ‘This Land Is Your Land’ at an anti-gay rally.”

Peter Yarrow noted that he and Paul Stookey have been supporters of marriage equality for some time.

Oy vey…if this is what the FRC is reduced to in order to try and get support for their anti-gay cause, then quite honestly, it’s time for them to give up.

It is past time for them to give up, sadly they refuse to.
