Zack Ford at ThinkProgress wrote about the pro-discrimination bill that was introduced in Washington State that “If a lawmaker’s staffer is willing to suggest that the alternative for same-sex families is to be self-sufficient and cut off from society, that should be a clear indication that this bill’s sole intent is animus.”
Actually, it was clear long before a staffer for state Senator Mike Hewitt answered an activist’s question with a rather flippant response. The activist asked Hewitt “What are rural gays suppose to do if the only gas station or grocery store for miles won’t sell them gas or food?”
The staffer replied “Well, gay people can just grow their own food.”
And they can, you know, set up their own oil rigs and refineries so that they can drill, pump, and refine oil to make gasoline for their cars!
The bill is little more than an attention grabbing stunt given that the Republicans in Washington State are the minority party in both the House and Senate. It is intended to raise their support with the anti-gay groups out there, and yes, it is based out of hatred, fear and bigotry. It seems strange that this would need to be noted only after Hewitt’s staffer made this comment.
Republicans are fighting a losing battle on the issue. The bill that has been introduce would allow homophobic business owners to bypass the local and state laws regarding non-discrimination, and tie non-discrimination into the Federal law. This could create far more problems than it would “solve”.
The bill was created because of a homophobic florist who refused to sell flowers to a gay couple for their wedding. What keeps getting ignored in the analysis of this is that the woman who owned the store had absolutely no compunction selling to them when they were not getting married despite knowing that they are gay.
This creates the issue of just how stupid her rationale is. No one seems to question or ask why her bigotry extends only to a word and a ceremony that she is not involved with, but not to her dealing with gays outright.
Has no one pointed out the hypocrisy of her actions?
