Another politician has come out in support for same-sex marriage and this time, it is a Republican. Joining the legions of Democrats supporting same-sex marriage, Senator Mark Kirk has endorsed same-sex marriage. On his blog today, he stated:
When I climbed the Capitol steps in January, I promised myself that I would return to the Senate with an open mind and greater respect for others.
Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage. Our time on this Earth is limited, I know that better than most. Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back– government has no place in the middle.
He joins Ohio Senator Rob Portman in endorsing same-sex marriage. Rick Garcia, the Director of the Equal Marriage Illinois Project, stated “We continue to see the momentum behind marriage equality grow, especially among Republicans. The momentum is stunning and we welcome it.”
Senator Kirk’s sexuality has long been the subject of rumors; however, he has never officially come out as anything. Senator Portman came out in support of same-sex marriage after revealing that his son is openly gay. Kirk’s suspected sexuality was the subject of rumors back in his last campaign. Supposedly Kirk has been seen in various DC gay bars, and fraternizing with gay men; however, it is unclear if the rumors were just created in order to hurt him or are more accurate.
Senator Kirk has long been away from the Senate Floor after suffering a stroke. He returned to the Senate after nearly a year’s absence while he recovered from the damage done by the stroke. This was in 2013.
Currently, all but eight Democrats and only two Republicans have come out in support of same-sex marriage in the Senate. The announcements come in the wake of the Supreme Court of the United States hearing oral arguments regarding same-sex marriage.
