TMZ is reporting that the son of Earvin “Magic” Johnson has “hit the Sunset Strip, hand in hand with his boyfriend.” Earvin “EJ” Johnson III’s parents have expressed their support stating that “Cookie and I love EJ and support him in every way. We’re very proud of him.”
EJ, 22, is a student at New York University and is a strong supporter of the Lakers as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers. No word as to what he is studying.
Recently, there have been quite a number of different news stories coming out lately regarding children coming out to their parents. Senator Rob Portman’s son came out to his father, causing the formerly homophobic Senator to change his mind on same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, Representative Matt Salmon, however, has stated that, despite having a gay son, he refuses to bend on LGBT rights.
Earvin Johnson III was born shortly after his father announced that he was battling HIV in 1991. Magic Johnson went public with his diagnosis at a time when being HIV-positive was a near career death sentence, and being HIV-positive was almost a certain death sentence. Instead, Magic Johnson has remained fairly healthy over the years and been strongly active in pursuing HIV/AIDS activism.
At the time Magic Johnson began his activism, HIV/AIDS was associated largely with gay men and drug addicts. Johnson, who is straight, became one of the most famous straight men to have the disease. He founded the Magic Johnson Foundation in November 1991 not long after he went public with the diagnosis.
In light of Magic Johnson’s battle with HIV/AIDS it seems like it was unlikely that he would have an issue with his son’s homosexuality.
