Break out the Weiner-mobile, disgraced former New York Representative Anthony Weiner is running for Mayor of New York. He made the announcement via a YouTube video released today:
Weiner is running in a crowded field of Democrats including current NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn. For her part, Quinn is running to become the city’s first woman and first openly lesbian mayor.
Weiner resigned from Congress back in 2011 after lewd photos of himself surfaced on Twitter. Weiner then lied about his account being hacked before admitting to sending inappropriate messages to six women online.
Weiner is currently married to Huma Abedin, the former top aid of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The couple have one son.
The former roommate of The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, Weiner has remained pretty much out of the spotlight since his resignation. He has recently do a profile for the New York Times Magazine.
Rather than hiding from his past scandal, Weiner states in his first official message in the campaign that “Look, I made some big mistakes. And I know I let a lot of people down. But I’ve also learned some tough lessons,” he says. Abedin is also in the video, which shows the couple and their son having breakfast. Abedin states in the video “We love this city, and no one will work harder to make it better than Anthony.”
Unfortunately for Weiner, he is currently running behind Quinn, who has dominated the polling for some time now.
Of course, if Weiner was truly seeking redemption and a second chance for elected office, he could do a lot better. It has been nearly 100 years since anyone who was Mayor of New York City went on to further public office.
The primary is scheduled for 10 September 2013.
