Conservatives are less than happy with the outcome of the recent vote by the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay Scouts even though it does not permit gay Scout leaders. Among the most vocal, of course, is Rick Perry who has opposed the vote for some time.
The compromise to allow gay Scouts but not gay Scout leaders has not really appeased anyone, thus making it the textbook definition of a good compromise. Still, the anti-gay activists out there are livid.
Current Texas Governor Rick Perry stated that “The Boy Scouts of America has been built upon the values of faith and family for more than 100 years. And today’s decision contradicts generations of tradition in the name of political correctness. While I will always cherish my time as a scout and the life lessons I learned, I am greatly disappointed with this decision.”
Similar statements were made around the time that the ban on Black Scouts was lifted.
The American Family Association through their pet news site has also claimed that “The Boy Scouts of America has turned against traditional values and moral standards – and that could turn off a large segment of America, according to pro-family groups.”
Randy Sharp, the director of special projects at the AFA, was there for the vote and has said “I think what we’re going to see in the next year or so is a mass exodus of adults and boys from the Boy Scouts of America program. Some of the estimates that I’ve heard are up to 400,000 to 500,000 boys and adults will resign their positions with the Boy Scouts of America.”
The Family Research Council is also upset. Their spokesman Rob Schwarzwalder stated “No one hates homosexuals. This isn’t about fear or homophobia, and this isn’t about bigotry. This is about the moral values of our Judeo-Christian heritage, which teaches the only appropriate sexually intimate activity that exists [is] between a man and a woman within marriage. That’s always been the affirmation of Scouts. It is no longer.”
Of course, the claims that this is not about hate, just forcing Christian values on someone so that they have to live in perpetual hatred of themselves and possibly be driven to suicide is a line that the Christian Taliban have been pushing for years never quite getting that their complaints are the same as those who once opposed desegregation on religious grounds.
And, of course, Peter LaBarbera had to weigh in. LaBarbera got the moniker “Porno Pete” because of his obsession with gay pornography. He stated “The Scouts has now become an organization which promotes the normalization of homosexuality. If you say that open homosexuality is consistent with being morally straight, you are a confused organization. You’re sending a confused moral message to young boys. . .the Scouts have snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory that they won when they preserved the right in the Supreme Court years ago to not have homosexual Scouts.”
Of course Sharp also claims that the Scouts will have to change their oath because “They can no longer include a reverence to God. They can no longer include being morally straight inside the Scout oath. So I think over the next couple of years they’re going to really regret this decision.”
Sharp, of course, also believes that there is a need for ‘a character-development program – and the Boy Scouts, by opting instead to promote an unhealthy, dangerous, and immoral lifestyle, will no longer provide that.’
To date, the only reason why anyone believes that homosexuality is unhealthy or immoral is because a book written some two thousand years ago says so, and even at that, it wasn’t taken to be a ban on all homosexual behaviors until about 1200, according to some sources.
