Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin is not a happy camper. He expressed his ‘profound disappointment’ over the legalization of same-sex marriage in that state…and warned Catholics that they should not be thinking of going to any lesbian or gay weddings- or else.
Tobin wrote in a pastoral letter that “Catholics should examine their consciences very carefully before deciding whether or not to endorse same-sex relationships or attend same-sex ceremonies, realizing that to do so might harm their relationship with God and cause significant scandal to others.”
Governor Lincoln Chafee signed the bill into law soon after it was passed, and it will go into effect on 1 August. Despite a strong Catholic majority, Rhode Island also had a majority of voters who supported marriage equality.
Tobin encouraged Catholics in the state to engage in “a moment of prayer and reflection” over the passage of the bill claiming that the world had now entered a post-Christian era. Many Christian denominations have come out in support of marriage equality. The Catholic Church has been adamantly against marriage equality, trying desperately to block it from happening.
Tobin has claimed that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered,” and “clearly contrary to God’s plan for the human family, and therefore objectively sinful.”
He also wrote that “The Catholic Church has fought very hard to oppose this immoral and unnecessary proposition, and we are most grateful to all those who have courageously joined us in this effort. When all is said and done, however, we know that God will be the final judge of our actions.” Tobin tried to force a measure to put the marriage equality bill to a popular vote, apparently forgetting that Maine passed their marriage equality law through a popular vote.
Tobin, deciding to ignore the Ten Commandments, claimed that the Catholic Church “has respect, love and pastoral concern for our brothers and sisters who have same-sex attraction. I sincerely pray for God’s blessings upon them, that they will enjoy much health, happiness and peace.” If Tobin and the Catholic Church actually had any respect or love for lesbians and gays, they would forgo fear mongering and lying in order to push their agenda.
