Maybe this time, Xena and Gabrielle can actually admit that they’re in love and destined for each other. It has been, after all, twelve years since “Xena: Warrior Princess” ended its run, and now a couple of tweets from Lucy Lawless and it seems possible that Xena may be coming back from the dead.
Lawless tweeted in two separate tweets “Had an interesting call from a chap who wants to re-invigorate the #Xena brand. You guys may have started something. . .But there’s a lot of red tape around #XWP so don’t get your knickers in a twist. It may come back in a different form.”
Now, it could mean a reboot of the series. That is rather common these days, and it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. After all, “Doctor Who” has shown that the technology has definitely come a long way since even when that came back. There have been some other shows that have come back from the grave in new form as reboots or second generations.
After Ellen noted that:
Don’t even worry about how she “died” at the end of the show. The secret of all comic book-y heroes is that they never really die. They’re like soap opera characters, but with cooler costumes. And also, don’t you dare say Lawless is too old to play Xena because I will legitimately reach through your laptop/iPhone/iPad and wallop you right in the noggin.
The question, of course, is would Xena be the same without Lucy?
Plus, we’re talking about Greek Mythology here. They loved to bring heroes back from the beyond, and they loved same-sex love. It was just the Victorians loved cutting out the fact that Athene was shagging quite a lot of ladies including the mum of Tiresias! And if you didn’t know that all four of the Galilean moons of Jupiter are all named for lovers of Zeus including Ganymede, his male lover.
The Greeks were cool with same-sex loving, so maybe this time Xena can be a tad more authentic on that front and take the subtext out of the closet.
Now all we need is a series starring our favorite interspecies lesbian detectives and their pet potato….
