Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel boldly went where no Secretary of Defense had gone before. He dared to face and speak to the lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in the service and the trans*people employed by the military today in order to speak to them.
The former Senator was not a popular choice to be Defense Secretary initially. Many LGBT groups were concerned and even deeply worried about Hagel given his past remarks about homosexuality. However, he seems to be very much a man willing to support LGB service members and LGBT DoD employees.
OutServe-SLDN has not commented upon today’s statements by Secretary Hagel, but they seem more preoccupied with publically airing their internal conflict than they do with actually commenting on LGBT issues in the military, at this present time.
And what a time it is. The Washington Post has been wonderful in providing this video:
Tomorrow, the US Supreme Court will rule on Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act. Should they strike down the section of DOMA that prevents the US government from recognizing same-sex marriages, it would mean that Hagel will finally be able to put an end to the discrimination that still lingers against LGB Americans in the military.
No word yet if the military will be reversing the decades old regulations which restrict trans*people from serving in the military. It seems that there is an advocacy group that should be pursuing that issue, but their petty internal squabbles seem to be causing them to forget that they are suppose to be doing that.
