Police have identified the man wanted in connection with the brutal beating death of Domonique Newburn. The 31-year-old star of the YouTube reality TV show Hollywood Houseboys was found murdered in her apartment on Tuesday.
Police are seeing 18-year-old Dantjier Powell in connection with the murder of Newburn.
Police have indicated that Newburn fought against her assailant. She is said to have sustained serious trauma during the attack. Witnesses have informed police that a shirtless black male fled the scene in Newburn’s black 2004 Mercedes-Benz C240.
Powell is from San Bernardino, and is Black, male, stands 5’8″ tall and weighs about 155lbs. He has an average build. Powell might be traveling via bus with Jamie Nicole Cotton, 25, of Highland. Police describe her as a Black woman, also 5’8″, about 150lb with black hair and brown eyes.
Detectives in LA served search warrants at the residencies of the two on Thursday and detained several people. They also collected evidence.
Newburn was described by neighbors as nice and quiet. She starred as Domonique Duffy on the docu-reality series Hollywood Houseboys. The series follows four gay men in Hollywood.
Newburn stated at one point that “I was formally a boy, now I’m a transgender. My family does not know about this. I never really was attracted to gay boys, or feminine, or undercover… I was always attracted to straight boys.”
Ryan Hope, the show’s creator, stated “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of our sister, Domonique Newburn. Domonique was an amazing person whose spirit transcended gender.”
Tara Wallace, a neighbor who attended a vigil in Newburn’s memory, stated “I feel kind of a sense of siblinghood with fellow trans people. We’re just trying to live like anybody else.”
No word yet if the incident was a hate crime.
