Linda Cooper turned her back on the church she had attended for sixty years with members of her family. She did so because of the love she has for her daughter, an 11 year veteran of the Collegedale, Tennessee police department.
Linda Cooper got into trouble with the Ridgedale Church of Christ when her daughter, Kat, testified at a hearing on whether the police force should allow benefits to same-sex couples. During the testimony, Linda Cooper sat next to her daughter, Kat, who is openly lesbian.
The elders at the Church informed Mrs. Cooper and two of her relatives that, by supporting her daughter, Kat, they had contravened the chruch’s teachings. They gave her and the relatives a choice- they could publically atone for their ‘transgressions’ or leave the church.
Ridgedale Church of Christ Minister Ken Willis stated that “The sin would be endorsing that lifestyle. The Bible speaks very plainly about that.” Willis, who is a father, said that the church did not expect the Cooper family to disown Kat, “But you certainly can’t condone that lifestyle, whether it’s any kind of sin — whether they’re shacked up with someone or living in a state of fornication or they’re guilty of crimes. You don’t condone it. You still love them as a parent.”
The Board of Commissioners did pass the resolution allowing for same-sex partner benefits in a vote of 4 to1.
Kat’s wife Krista Cooper stated that “Just as my parents have kicked me out of their lives and don’t want anything to do with me. This is exactly what this church has done to Kat’s mom, uncle and aunt.”
Actions, as they say, have consequences, however, and the first of those for the Ridgedale Church of Christ is that some LGBT activists have taken over the church’s Facebook page. Apparently, the church created the site back in 2010, and had no followers or an apparent administrator. An unnamed Facebook user claimed it as the administrator.
The user began posting away including posting an infographic about how the Bible defines marriage as being “between a man and a woman; between a man, his wives and his concubines; between a rapist and his victim; and so on.”
The activist stated that “I did it because I knew that people who supported the church’s actions would flock to their aid online in social media and I wanted to make sure to give voice to dissenting viewpoints.” Apparently, this person has “a legitimate background in academic biblical studies.” The activist wants to promote “accuracy when it comes to the way the Bible is portrayed.”
The activist pointed out that the Bibile “does not address our modern understanding of human relationships–sexual and non-sexual alike.” They also said that the church’s supporters are ignorant of what’s in the Bible. They said “They are usually blinded by nostalgia (largely from Sunday school/Christian upbringings) and myopia.”
